I thought it would be fun to do an entire look with nothing but Rimmel products to show that you can be budget conscious but still have a quality look. I chose 7 products to use for my look. Those 7 products were used in a 5 step process. This is strictly makeup, no skin care. I always start with a moisturizer and sunscreen if my foundation doesn't have any.
I applied my makeup at around noon, and I'm writing this at just after midnight. I'll give an update at the end as to how everything is holding out.
- Step One: The Base. The Base consists of primer and foundation. I'm obsessed with primer. Foundation lasts longer, sits better, and looks nicer with a primer. A primer can also reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone. I have ridiculously huge pores on my nose and without primer, my foundation settles in and leaves my nose looking like a golf ball. Primer helps cover my pores and create a much more even and dimple free look.
I chose Rimmel Skin Perfecting Lasting Finish Primer. $6.99
This primer has more of a dewy, almost shimmery, finish than most primers do so I thought it would be a good choice with a matte foundation. Along with gallon sized pores, I also have a couple of dry spots that can look cakey and flakey if I use a mattifying primer and foundation. I need some moisture somewhere. This primer is super lightweight and blurred my pores nicely. I apply primer with my fingers. A little bit goes a long way, and primer is something you want to make sure you don't put too much of on, or it will get gummy.
For foundation, I chose Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation. $4.49
This foundation is more mousse than liquid and is very light and breathable. It's a medium to full coverage depending on hoe much you blend it out. A little dab will do ya with this. I used a dollop about the size of a pea and was able to do my whole face and neck at full coverage. I use a beauty sponge to apply, so that helps maximize how far a product will go. It also helps blend foundation very nicely.
- Step Two: Definition. Definition consists of blush, contour, and highlight. Contour and highlight help to sculpt your face to make it look more defined. My face is fat so I need all the help I can get in that department. Blush gives you that rosy youthful glow.
I chose the Rimmel Kate Sculpting and Highlighting Kit for definition. $6.99
I like this palette because it covers the whole step in one product. I usually use a creme contour, which requires a setting powder and can end up looking a little cakey. I've never tried a powder contour so I was pretty excited to give this a go. I used brushes to apply, and another brush to blend.
- Step Three: Eyes. Eyes consist of mascara, eyeliner, and eyeshadow.
For eyeliner, I chose ScandalEyes Thick and Thin Liner. $5.99
This liner goes on very smoothly and evenly. I love that it can do a fine line or a thick line. I tried to do a wing, but I just could not get it to look good on my right eye so I smoked it out with my eyeshadow.
For eyeshadow, I decided to blend the colors of the sculpting palette to let it pull double duty. I did a simple crease application, blended down to my lash line on the top and a quick stroke under the bottom lash line. I blended to smoke out my liner along both lash lines.
For mascara I chose Rimmel Volume Accelorator Mascara. $9.49.
I found it interesting that this claims it can grow your lashes over time. This neither lengthened nor plumped my lashes at all, so I hope it can at least grow them. It was very hard not to reach for the falsies after I put this on. It's definitely not the best mascara Rimmel has to offer.
- Step Four: Brows. I'm brow challenged. I need a product that is super easy to use. Like, basically idiot proof. Even then, it's highly probable that I'm going to screw them up.
I chose Rimmel Brow This Way Brow Styling Gel. $4.49
This is super easy to apply. It still got away from me, though. One of my brows is twice as thick as the other so in order to creae the same depth of color I have to be light handed on one and heavy handed on the other. I have yet to find the perfect balance. This is so much better than a pencil and powder, though.
- Step Five: Lips.
I chose Rimmel Show Off Lip Velvet Matte Liquid Lipstick in Atomic Rose. $4.99
I was expecting a light pink color, but it's more of a coral nude. Not exactly my favorite, but it wasn't too bad. I love, love, LOVE the formula of this. It goes on buttery smooth, and dries down to a nice matte finish but does not feel dry on the lips at all.
So here's what I looked like at the finish of the 5 Steps.
Not too shabby if I do say so myself. I look passable for a human. That's all that matters. I could stand to go heavier on the blush and highlight. The lip color isn't bad at all now that I look at it again. Definitely not bad for a $43.43 total. Even more expensive drugstore brands would run you around $100 for these same items, and you wouldn't even get the same quality of products.
For the real test, how does it look after 12 hours of wear? The lipstick is mostly gone, and the eyeliner smeared a bit. Mascara and brow gel are still firmly in place. Foundation is showing some wear off around the base of my nose and is creasing in my smile lines and in the verticle lines on my forehead. There's also a bit of displacement on my nose. My pores are visible.
I took a dab of primer and quickly worked out the creases and the wear on my nose, and took an eyeshadow blending brush and cleaned up my eye area. A quick coat of lipstick and I could keep this look going for a few more hours if I needed too.
Good makeup doesn't have to cost a fortune. What is your favorite "drugstore" brand? What is your favorite Rimmel London product?

ReplyDeleteYour face looks flawless, I really like the results. I don't really use primers and any other kind of make-up other than my usual eyeliner and lipstick, but you can't deny that these do wonders for our skin.

ReplyDeleteI've seen Rimmel makeup, but haven't tried it yet. Thanks for the review, I'll be giving a few of these a try.
ReplyDeletePores? what pores? Flawless finish to your face. Really like that lip color on you - flattering. Without this offer you probably would never have discovered that color. Agree with you on the brows and blush, but only because we're scrutinizing; otherwise would not have noticed. Wish you had been brave enough to post the 12-hour photo so we could see how these products REALLY hold up. I have yet to find a lip color that lasts without fading or turning dry & cakey.
ReplyDeleteThese sounded like some really nice products. I definitely like the finished look!
ReplyDeleteRimmel makes some truly awesome products! My favourite are their waterproof Kajal liners - they don't budge a bit! And the lip colour is fantastic on you!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't big fan of that stay matte on my skin type, but their mascaras are awesome!

ReplyDeleteI have trouble doing the wings too. You did a great job, your eyes look nice.
ReplyDeleteI use Rimmel too and it is fantastic ! I love your coral/ nude lippie.
ReplyDeleteI usually go for store brand because I rarely ever wear makeup. So I would hate to spend tons of money on expensive brands only for them to go bad (expire) before I get to use them. You look great by the way!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a nice product! Love the shades. Thanks for the information.
ReplyDeleteI normally go for affordable products that work effectively. I can't afford to buy all kinds of MAC all the time no matter how good it is.
