Whether you’ve just started dating or have been together for years, a movie night with your other half is always a good idea! It’s cheap, convenient and you don’t have to move off the sofa- what’s not to love? Especially after a long week, when going out or doing anything energetic feels like far too much hassle. Now the weather is cooling down and the nights are drawing in quicker, it’s the perfect chance to start introducing couples movie nights back into your routine. Want to plan the perfect night in for you and your loved one? Here are a few things to think about when setting it up.

Movies
You will, of course, need some movies to watch! You could search the best Netflix movies, or pick up a DVD when you’re at a store. Alternatively, you could keep your eye out a few days before your night in, and see if anything good is being shown on tv. That way you can record it on your cable/ satellite box ready for the evening. All you have to do is then decide on what you are going to watch! If you have very different tastes, you could each pick a film and watch them both during the night. Or watch one this time and the next on the next movie night.

Food and Drinks
Let's face it, one of the best parts about a movie night is scoffing the delicious snacks. You could whip up something during the day- Pinterest has lots of ideas for this kind of thing. You could order in some fast food if you were feeling lazy, or just pour some snacks and finger foods into bowls. Either way, the food is an essential thing to get right for your couples night! For drinks, you could go with a few alcoholic beverages. Or if you don’t drink (or have work the next day!) something like hot chocolate would be perfect for this time of year.

Cozy Seating
Plenty of cushions, throws and pillows will get your seating area as comfy as possible. Things like throws can wear out, and cushions can become flat over time. If you have found that this is the case with yours, you could look into completely replacing them. Plush, soft cushions and new snuggly blankets are always a delight, and the perfect accompaniment to your couples movie night!

Scented Candles
Not only do scented candles make the room smell nice, but the soft glow is always kind of romantic which is nice when you are spending the evening with your loved one. Candles help to set the ambiance and make everywhere feel extra cozy. If you’re all about fragrance, you could also use wax burners. These allow you to mix and match scents better than full candles.

Yummy In My Tummy: Family Meal Times Made Easier

Parenthood comes with many challenges; there’s no doubt about that. Of course, one of the most challenging parts of being a parent has to be family mealtimes. Between school pickups, sports practices, and work, it can be a real struggle to get a healthy meal on the table each night. It’s not only time that can be an issue either, lots of kids have different tastes and go through stages of being fussy about what they will and will not eat. Making mealtimes even more complex.
As a parent, you want to ensure that your children eat well, and get a wholesome meal each night. The problem is that sometimes it can seem almost impossible to put together a healthy meal that everyone in the household will eat. As a mom, I can relate to this and know the struggle all too well. There’s nothing more frustrating than struggling to find the time to cook dinner, only for your children to refuse to eat it.
family meal s.jpg
The good news is, however, that family mealtimes don’t have to be a struggle. There are some simple steps that you can take to not only make it easier to get a healthy meal prepared but also to ensure that everyone is happy to eat it. (This is possible, I promise!) Here’s what you need to do:
Plan your meals
One of the best and easiest things you can do to make weeknight meal times easier is plan them in advance. It might seem somewhat daunting to plan a whole week’s meals in advance, but trust me on this, it will make your life so much easier. It’s just a case of getting into a routine. It’s a good idea to set aside an hour or so one day a week to plan your meals for the following seven days or so. That way you can commit fully to it and think about what the best dishes to serve are, as well as what you will need for them. It pays to make a shopping list at the same time as you are planning your meals so that you don’t end up forgetting anything important. By planning your meals in advance, you will also find that it’s much easier to keep family food costs low.
Take your weekly routine into account
slow cooker.jpg
When it comes to planning family meals for the week, one thing that you don’t want to forget is to take your weekly routine into account. Take the time to look at yours’ and your family’s schedules to see what nights are going to be the most hectic. For those nights, plan a meal that’s quick and easy to make, or use your slow cooker and prepare dinner in the morning. For those nights when it’s crazy, leftovers can be a godsend. I tend to freeze all my leftovers and then defrost them as and when I need them for quick meals. Look at your schedule and determine whether there are any nights where everyone needs to eat at different times due to clubs and activities. For these nights, a slow cooker meal really is your best option. By taking your schedule into account when meal planning, you can make it much easier for yourself.
Ensure you have the right equipment
If your kitchen doesn’t have all the necessary equipment, you will find making family meals even more difficult. The chances are you already have the basics - pots, pans, serving spoons, etc., but what are you lacking? If you don’t have a slow cooker, I suggest that you get one. For those days when you know you’re not going to have time to cook when you get home, a slow cooker can be a godsend. You just pop the ingredients in it in the morning, set to low, and that’s dinner sorted - by the time you come home it should be perfectly cooked.  Or, how about investing in cast iron skillets instead? You can use these to cook on the hob and then place the meal into the oven to bake or simply keep warm. This means that if dinner’s ready a little earlier than you would like, it’s much easier to keep it warm while you wait for everyone to get home. What about a food processor - do you have one of these? If not, they’re more than worth the investment, as they make preparing food much quicker and easier. By having the right equipment on hand, cooking meals becomes a whole lot easier.
Ask your children what meals they like
tacos.jpg
Hold a family meeting and ask everyone what meals they like and which they don’t like. Give everyone a sheet of paper and a pen and get them to write down the meals that they enjoy and the ones that they don’t like. Then, you can use their answers to delve a little deeper into why certain people don’t like a dish. Let’s say one of your kids says that they don’t like spaghetti and meatballs; you can then ask them why. The chances are it’s a trivial thing, like the fact the sauce has chopped mushroom in it, for instance. The good news is this is something that’s easy to change. Use the answers that you get to write a list of meals that everyone in the household likes - this will make meal planning a little easier for you.
Make mealtimes more fun with themed nights
A great way to make weeknight meals more interesting is by having themed nights. So, for instance, Tuesdays could become 'Taco Tuesday', meaning that every Tuesday, you serve tacos for tea. Or, Mondays could become 'Meatball Monday' - you get the idea. By having themed nights throughout the week, you can make mealtimes more fun and enjoyable for your little ones. The great thing about this is that what you serve can still be healthy and homemade, your kids just don’t realize it, that’s all. You can even make pizza - a family favorite - healthy by making it yourself.
Have one night a week where you try something new
cooking with.jpg
To encourage your children to be open to new foods, one night a week try something new. This should ideally be on a night when there’s no rush to eat, and you have time to sit down as a family and enjoy a meal. Perhaps each week you could allow one of your kids to pick a new dish to try? This could be a dish that they’ve tried at a friend’s house and loved or something out of a recipe book, either way; it doesn’t matter. Just make sure that any dishes that you make, don’t include things that anyone in the household doesn’t like. At first, your little ones may not be keen to try new dishes, but once they realize that they get to pick them, they’ll soon get into the swing of it.
Family meal times can be one of the hardest parts of parenthood to navigate, especially when everyone has different tastes. The important thing is not to get stressed out, and to make time for weekly meal planning and preparation. As by doing this, you can make weeknights much less stressful for everyone. If your child doesn’t like something, take it into account. If you don’t, you’ll only end up with more problems. The chances are they’ll grow out of fussy eating, but to make mealtimes easier for now, listen to their likes and dislikes. It will make family life a whole lot easier.

Child Passenger Safety Prize Pack Giveaway

Nothing is more important than making sure your kids are happy and safe, so we've teamed up with BubbleBum to share some tips for child passenger safety and to give away a fantastic prize package to one lucky family! Kids love staying both safe and comfortable with BubbleBum’s kid-approved, super cool inflatable booster seat. Buckle up your older kids (age 4-11) in a car booster seat providing safety and comfort that is the top choice for all parents. BubbleBum gives kiddos the perfect "boost" to prevent the risk of slouching (which happens with flat car booster seats) and seat belt abdominal injury in the event of a crash. The cool factor makes kids more likely to want to use a booster seat.

BubbleBum weighs less than a pound and inflates/deflates in minutes. It meets and exceeds all Europe and U.S. safety regulations, even in the deflated state. The air-filled design provides extra comfort compared to flat booster seat alternatives. BubbleBum booster seats utilize memory foam technology to help create stability and structural integrity in the seat with side positioners to correctly position the lap belt. BubbleBum was created by Grainne Kelly, an Irish mom-of-two, as a solution to her own struggles lugging heavy booster seats during her travels with her kids. With her expertise and direction, BubbleBum is leading the way in ensuring that every child has a safe and comfortable booster seat on every car ride. And to help you ensure every child is safe in every vehicle, Grainne has the below tips for you:

Tips for Child Passenger Safety

  • Visit a Safe Kids child restraint check-up event. There are over 500 safety inspection stations across the U.S. that are set up to help teach parents how to safely transport kids. Many safety stations are located in GM dealerships, hospitals, or fire stations. Check for an event or check-up station near you at www.safekids.org.
  • Buckle up your child for every drive, starting with the first ride home from the hospital. Set a good example by buckling up for every ride, too.
  • Keep babies in a rear-facing car seat until they are at least 2-years-old. Check your state law and car seat manufacturer’s guidelines for height and weight. Kids receive the best protection from head, neck, and spinal injuries in a rear-facing position.
  • When installing forward-facing car seats, attach the top tether after tightening the lock and seat belt or lower latches. Ensure the seat is securely fastened before putting your child in the car seat. Tug on the seat, and if it moves more than an inch, it has not been installed properly.
  • Treat kids like VIPS: keep them in the backseat until they are 13.
  • Check car seat labels to determine if they are an appropriate fit for your child’s age, height, and weight.
  • Toys can injure kids in a crash, so only bring soft toys than can be secured and can’t float freely in the car.
  • Check your car seat’s expiration date, as most car seats expire within six years. Check the label to make sure it still meets safety requirements. If it is out of date, discard it in a dark trash bag so it won’t be pulled from the trash and reused.
  • Don’t buy a used car seat from a thrift store or Craigslist, as it is important to know the history of the car seat by knowing the previous owner. Once a car seat has expired or been in a crash, it is deemed unsafe and must be discarded.
  • Use the pinch test to ensure the car seat straps are snug enough. When buckled in, parents should not be able to pinch extra fabric on the strap around the child’s shoulders.
  • Your child is ready for a booster seat if he exceeds height and weight limits, his shoulders are above the harness slots, or his ears are above the top of the car seat.
  • Have a portable booster seat handy (such as the BubbleBum inflatable booster seat) on vacations to use in taxi rides, rental cars, grandma’s car or for that extra unexpected little passenger in daily carpooling. They are easy to pack fitting into a large pursue or backpack and easy to inflate. Kids are 59% safer in booster seat than just a seat belt. BubbleBum meets and exceeds the US FMVSS213 safety regulations and has been awarded the Best BET Booster award by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety multiple times.
  • Never leave a child alone in the car, as the temperatures in a car can escalate quickly in warm weather and cause a heat stroke or even death. Leaving the car running to keep kids cool or warm depending on the weather is not safe, as a running car is a target for thieves and toddlers are able to accidentally engage the vehicle if they get out of their seat. Always take kids inside when you are running errands.
