FREE Car Seat Inspection

September is a time for a lot of things – though some went back in August, it marks the month for back to school for many of us. It is also that one month that gives us the transition from Summer to Fall – depending on where you live, the weather isn’t quite hot, but it also isn’t too cool yet either. But September is also a very important month for another reason – Child Passenger Safety Week. And while we should all ALWAYS be conscientious about child and other passenger safety; this week signifies a time that we can spread the message to everyone in mass!
This year, Child Passenger Safety Week will run from September 17-23. With more than 1000 events are expected in 45 states across the country to raise awareness for proper car seat installation and usage, this is a great time to brush up on car seat safety tips and make sure your child is in the right seat, with the right fit and installation.

For most of us, grabbing our gear and running out the door and hoping in the car is an everyday occurrence. Maybe you are headed to work, a play date, or on vacation – but we spend a lot of times in our cars. When we have little ones, we put them in their car seat and buckle them up without a second thought to whether or not they are in the right seat. We trust that they are safe – and we go on our way.
Did you know that every 33 seconds a child under 13 is involved in a car crash in the United States?
Car seats, if used correctly, can dramatically reduce the risk of fatality or injury. But over half of car seats are misused in a way that could reduce their effectiveness and 1 in 3 children killed in car crashes are completely unrestrained at the time of the crash.
Can you imagine? Thinking that your child is in the right car seat, only to find out that they aren’t!
Car seat laws had changed since I had my last child. I was glad that I was able to have an expert check mine out to make sure I had it properly installed. It can be hard to stay on top of all the details by myself, so I’m grateful for resources like NHTSA.gov/TheRightSeat, which has videos about how to install car seats and booster seats correctly and guides to picking the right seat by age and size.

The week concludes with “Seat Check Saturday,” where Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will help parents and caregivers make sure their car seats are installed correctly. In most cases, this service is FREE.

Here’s a video that has been helpful for me:

To make sure you have the right seat for your child, visit NHTSA.gov/TheRightSeat, or find a Child Passenger Safety Week event in your area. During Child Passenger Safety Week, many communities will have Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians on-hand to provide education on how to use car seats, booster seats, and seat belts for children. Make a Big Impact on your Community by Volunteering

This is a sponsored post on behalf of the Mission List.

It is very rewarding to be a volunteer,  I recently joined members of my community to pick up litter.  When people visit my community, I don't want them to see litter on the side of the road.  It's so easy to get some garbage bags and get out there and pick it up.  While it may not be the most glamorous job, it definitely made an impact on my community.  It's also a job people of any age can do.  One thing I can say about this type of volunteering is that people will stop and ask if they can help!  So, I say yes and give them a trash bag.  When visitors come to your community and see that it is litter free, they want to come back.

I hold many hats when it comes to volunteering.  I read to kids in school that are having trouble learning how to read.  I am a volunteer for Special Olympics.  I am the parent that volunteers for school functions.  You might find me selling snacks at the concession stand during a football game.  You might find me backstage during a school play making sure things stay organized.   I volunteer at my local Boys and Girls club by helping the kids with homework or helping them to create a fun art project.  I volunteer in the school library.

My favorite volunteer activity is reading to children.  I have always had a love for books and I want others to enjoy reading, too.   I read to individual children,  as well as a group of children.  Knowing you have helped a child learn how to read is very rewarding.  I read to one little boy that did not speak English,  I read to him every week.  At the end of the school year, he was so excited to READ TO ME!  I cried happy tears.

Later this year, an organization very near and dear to my heart, Special Olympics, will take place in my region.  My son is a special needs child and participates in Special Olympics.  I have volunteered for Special Olympics for 12 years.  With hundreds of kids from surrounding communities come together for Special Olympics, many volunteers are needed.  From the opening ceremonies to the last medal is handed out, it is very rewarding to watch all the kids as they participate in a day of fun!

There are many ways you can volunteer in your community.  The small changes you make close to home have a huge impact on making the world a better place. Have you heard of Rewards Volunteers?  Rewards Volunteers is a website that you can log your volunteer hours and win prizes, find volunteer opportunities in your community, and engage with other volunteers.  Organizations also benefit when they register to be a Rewards Volunteers organization and their volunteers log their hours.

Volunteering is fun and rewarding and it is something anybody can do. It is up to you as to how much time you spend. It makes your community and our world a better place.

How to make a Halloween Graveyard Cake

This post contains affiliate links.  If you click and buy, this website makes a small commission

Let the chocolate fun begin!  My kids love helping me make this Halloween Graveyard cake every year.  Topped with  all things spooky and covered with chocolate frosting, it is sure to delight. This is the easiest thing you will make because it calls for boxed cake mix, Milano cookies, pretzels and Peeps.  If you cannot find the Peeps, you can always use large marshmallows and draw the eyes on ! I hope your family enjoys making and eating this as much as mine does.👻👻

Items needed:

1 (15-ounce) box Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix
1 (5-ounce) package Chocolate Instant Pudding & Pie Filling
1 cup Sour Cream
1/2 cup Vegetable Oil
1/2 cup Warm Water
4 large Eggs

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x13 inch pan and line with wax paper. In a large mixing bowl and with an electric mixer, beat together cake mix, chocolate pudding mix, sour cream, vegetable oil, warm water and eggs. Pour batter into the pan. Bake on the 3rd (middle) rack for around 35 minutes or until center is set. Remove from oven and let cool completely, then turn over onto a large cake plate or board and remove the wax paper.

Frosting & Decorations:

6 cups Powdered Sugar
2/3 cup Cocoa Powder
1 ½ sticks Unsalted Butter (3/4 cup) (room temp.)
1/3 cup Milk
1 ½ teaspoon Vanilla Extract
Pepperidge Farm Milano Cookies
Candy Corn and Pumpkins
Pretzel Sticks
Ghost Peeps
Halloween Sprinkles

Combine powdered sugar and cocoa powder, then sift into a mixing bowl and set aside. In a large mixing bowl and with an electric mixer, beat butter with powdered sugar/cocoa mixture alternating with the milk. Beat in vanilla extract. Frost cake with most of the frosting, reserving a small amount to place in a quart size freezer bag. Cut a very tiny slit in the corner of the bag and pipe words like “RIP & Boo” onto the Milano cookies, then set aside to let the frosting dry. Using candy corn, make a pathway on top of the cake. Line pretzel sticks on both sides of the pathway, going around the sides of the cake to make a fence. Cut small slits on top of the cake and place Milano cookies a little ways down in them for the graves. Place ghost peeps on top of the cake and decorate with Halloween candy and sprinkles.
