Haunted Savannah, GA: A Journey Through the Supernatural

Nestled along the scenic banks of the Savannah River, Savannah, Georgia, is a city renowned for its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture. Beneath the charming facades of its historic homes and cobblestone streets, however, lies a darker and more mysterious side of the city. Savannah is often referred to as one of the most haunted cities in the United States, with a long and storied history of paranormal activity that has captivated both locals and tourists alike. In this blog post, we will embark on a supernatural journey through haunted Savannah, exploring its most famous ghostly tales and the haunted locations that have earned the city its spooky reputation.

The History of Haunted Savannah

To understand the ghostly tales of Savannah, it's essential to delve into the city's history. Founded in 1733, Savannah boasts a tumultuous past that includes battles, epidemics, fires, and more. The combination of these historical events has left an indelible mark on the city and is believed to be responsible for the numerous ghostly encounters reported by its residents and visitors.

The Sorrel-Weed House

Our journey begins at the Sorrel-Weed House, one of the most iconic haunted locations in Savannah. This historic mansion, built in the early 1840s, is renowned for its stunning Greek Revival architecture and its dark history. It's said that Francis Sorrel, the original owner, committed suicide in the house, and his spirit is believed to haunt the premises. Visitors have reported hearing disembodied voices, footsteps, and even witnessing apparitions within its walls.

The Mercer-Williams House

Made famous by the best-selling book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" by John Berendt, the Mercer-Williams House is another haunted landmark in Savannah. The house, built in the 1860s, has been the site of tragic events, including a murder. Some believe that the restless spirit of Jim Williams, the house's former owner, continues to roam its halls.

Colonial Park Cemetery

Colonial Park Cemetery, dating back to 1750, serves as the final resting place for many of Savannah's early residents. However, due to vandalism and erosion, it's believed that some graves were disturbed and the spirits of the deceased disturbed in the process. Ghostly sightings, cold spots, and eerie apparitions have been reported by those who visit this historic burial ground.

The Pirates' House

As one of Savannah's oldest buildings, the Pirates' House has a rich history that includes serving as an inn for seafarers and, according to legend, a meeting place for pirates. It's said that the ghost of Captain Flint, a notorious pirate, haunts the establishment. Diners and staff have reported encounters with this spectral pirate, adding to the lore of the place.

Moon River Brewing Company

Even Savannah's breweries have their fair share of paranormal activity. Moon River Brewing Company, housed in a historic building dating back to 1821, has a reputation for being one of the most haunted pubs in the city. Patrons and employees have reported seeing shadowy figures, experiencing unexplained cold spots, and hearing ghostly whispers.

Why is Savannah So Haunted?

With its tumultuous history and a high concentration of historic buildings, Savannah offers fertile ground for ghostly tales. Many believe that the residual energy from the city's past tragedies and conflicts has contributed to the prevalence of paranormal activity. Additionally, Savannah's embrace of its haunted reputation has led to numerous ghost tours and paranormal investigations, further fueling the city's supernatural allure.

Ghost Tours and Paranormal Investigations

For those brave enough to explore Savannah's haunted history firsthand, a variety of ghost tours and paranormal investigations are available. These tours often visit the city's most famous haunted locations, providing participants with a chance to learn about the history and ghostly tales associated with each site. Whether you're interested in a spooky stroll through the historic district or a more in-depth investigation with paranormal equipment, Savannah offers something for every level of ghost enthusiast.

Savannah, Georgia, is a city of unparalleled charm and beauty, but it also harbors a dark and mysterious side that continues to captivate visitors from around the world. From haunted mansions to historic cemeteries, the supernatural is deeply intertwined with the city's rich history. Whether you're a skeptic or a true believer, exploring the haunted side of Savannah is an experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression, and perhaps even a ghostly encounter to remember. So, the next time you find yourself in this enchanting city, be sure to keep an eye out for the spirits that may be lurking just beyond the shadows.

Best Northern Illinois Road Trips

America is a country partially built on the great tradition of road trips. Before everyone started flying everywhere, the country’s intricate road networks, which still crisscross the nation, were the lifeblood of many a small town and city. For many, they still are. If you’re thinking about your next road trip in northern Illinois, we have some great tips for you on where to go! We’ll look at three routes --- the Great River Road, Historic Route 66, and the Illinois Lincoln Highway.

Great River Road
This 570-mile stretch runs from East Dubuque in the north, down to Cairo in the south, following the Mississippi River all the way, and passing through some 18 different counties. Winter time is especially good if you’re a birdwatcher. The skies will be littered with eagles and other spectacular birds of prey. The northern part of the route is filled with great charming riverside spots and lovely towns full of their own unique character. Stop in Galena to see the characteristic old buildings housing the artisanal shops and small restaurants. You can get more history in Nauvoo too, the town named by Mormon church founder, Joseph Smith. The town is a treasure trove of heritage. Finally, there’s Quincy, whose Washington Park hosts great events like the Dogwood Festival.

Historic Route 66
Starting in the incredible city of Chicago, this iconic route heads west, with 300 miles of road in Illinois alone. Over its long history it has become a literary and cultural icon, at first symbolizing escape, especially from events like the Dust Bowl. Nowadays, though, it’s about adventure and renewal. Why not enjoy the Illinois end of the route, enjoying highlights like Lou Mitchell’s Restaurant and Bakery. Located right at the beginning of the route in downtown Chicago, it’ll give you the perfect sendoff with sumptuous breakfast and lunch fare before your journey starts. Automobile enthusiasts also shouldn’t miss the Pontiac-Oakland Automobile Museum --- a temple to automotive heritage. Route 66 is history in your backyard. Don’t miss out!

Illinois Lincoln Highway
This 179-mile National Scenic Byway is steeped in heritage, and runs across much of the north of the state. It is now mostly paralleled by I-80 and I-88. It is part of a much larger system, of course, running east to west coast to coast. Many sights and towns on the route are well worth a visit, such as Dixon, IL, the childhood home of none other than former President, Ronald Reagan. If that’s not for you, then stop in beautiful Joliet to take in the views of the Des Plaines River and the rugged limestone exteriors that still clad this former steel town. Travel the road and visit the unique communities along the way. There’s all the warmth and hospitality in the world waiting for you.

How to Save Money on Gas

Image result for gas fill up pixabay
Ever since the automobile became a staple of the American household, a burning question has remained in the minds of every family --- how much is a gallon of gas? The volatile energy markets can force gas prices up or down in wild fluctuations, and so we think it’s important that you know how to save on gas usage. However good things look now, price-wise, it’s sure not to stay that way forever.

Tip Number 1 – Drive Less
OK, we admit, this one sounds a bit obvious. If you drive less, you’ll use less gas. Of course! It doesn’t take a genius, but let’s look at this seriously. If you reflect on how much you are using your car, even for journeys under a mile, then you are probably wasting a lot fuel. Consider walking or riding a bike if you can.

Tip Number 2 – Shorten the Warm Up
If you have harsh winters, or are far up north where most mornings are rather chilly, then part of your morning routine is starting the car a couple of minutes early to get her warmed up before the commute or the school run. Try keeping your warm up within 30 seconds. You’ll be amazed how much you can save over time.

Tip Number 3 – Watch Your Speed
Staying well within the speed limits and maintaining steady cruising speeds over distance will help conserve gas. Always slowing down and speeding up is a real gas guzzling tactic, as is driving faster in general. Slow down and go steady.

Tip Number 4 – Stay on Top of Maintenance
Ignoring basic maintenance steps could be adding to your gas costs, did you know that? Some of the top things to check that can save you on gas are the tire pressure, changing out the air filters (especially in dusty areas) and making sure that you’re using the right motor oil for your vehicle (check the manual for that).

Tip Number 5 – Avoid Highway Gas Stations
Here’s something you may never have expected before, but gas from stations that are located right on main highways is usually pricier than that from other stations. Well, when you’re on the highway, where else are you going to go? Are you going to take a big detour to find some smaller station elsewhere? Unlikely. Gas up fully before you head to the highway.

Tip Number 6 – Buy When it’s Cooler
A final tip from us today – buy gas in the early mornings or later in the evenings when the temperature has dropped. Here’s the chemistry part --- when it’s cool out, the gas is denser and you’ll get more bang for your buck when pumping. More gas will come through, but the price won’t change. Avoid pumping in the heat and watch the savings roll in!

Follow these tips and avoid spending too much on gas. Every little helps Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Top Tips: Preparing for a Road Trip

Summer is here and that means the family road trip to “Wherever, USA” is almost upon you, too. We know that packing for a road trip can seem like a real ordeal, especially for a family with young kids. It’s not just the distance or the gas mileage, it’s keeping the kids entertained, being ready for anything, having snacks and so much more. Here’s our handy guide to getting the car properly stocked before the big road trip.

1. Bring all the essential documents – pack your license, registration and a copy of your insurance information somewhere safe but easily accessible (like the glove box) just in case. You should always have them ready in your car, anyway.

2. Think of emergency supplies – a first-aid kit, a roadside emergency kit, blankets and travel pillows for comfortable sleeps along the way. Check the spare tire is in working order, and do some simple maintenance checks; tire pressure, oil, air filters etc. before you go. Finally, don’t forget toilet paper and/or Clorox wipes, because…well…everybody needs them!

3. Entertainment for the kids – if they’re on screen time, then portable DVD players, tablet computers or something that can play movies and TV to keep them amused for a few hours. If your car has them built in then bully for you. If they’re not on screen time, then a fun sing-along playlist for the car is a good idea, as well as a bank of easy-to-play travel games. I Spy, spot the car brand, license plate numbers, visual scavenger hunts…the sky’s the limit.

4. Snacks – audio-visual entertainment is never truly enough. To really keep everyone in the car happy, you need snacks. Don’t just plump straight for the easy chips or other high-salt snacks. If you plan, you can prepare some delicious and healthy treats that give the right amount of fiber and protein to every passenger. Celery sticks with peanut butter, carrot sticks, hummus, apple slices, trail mix, pb&j --- the list goes on.

5. Summer gear – wherever you’re going this summer, there’s a good chance that even on the way you’ll be under the baking sun or outdoors more than usual. Pack sunglasses, hats and sunscreen for you and the whole family. Better to have these things and then not need them than the other way around.

Take our advice and packing for the trip won’t seem like such an ordeal! What’s more, it’ll help facilitate a happier and more fun car journey for all concerned. Happy and safe travels, everyone!

Miami Blues: Best Things To Do On The Water

If you’re travelling to Miami and you’re not testing the waters, then what are you really doing? It's the one place in the world where the waters are almost always turquoise blue and calm. Maybe it will always play second fiddle to godlike places such as the Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas but if you’re in America, it simply doesn’t get better. And no, not even Californians can say they have better waters that Florida, Miami. It's the one place to be if you are looking for some watersports. Here you will find just about everything you can think of. From looking at what’s below the surface in a snorkelling lesson, to ripping the water apart in powerful jet ski. You are in fact spoiled for choice here as pretty much every water sport and activity on the planet can be done here. But if you don’t have all week or month, you need to spread your time and efforts out wisely. In order to enjoy what’s on offer you need to give each activity some time so you can understand it and get proficient in it. First time hitting the waves? If you’re new to Miami then don’t fret, there are many things you can do to familizare yourself with the waters. As with any kind of coastal hotspot, there is a set limit to the coast, how far you can go and obviously even speed limits on the waters in crowded areas. So for a first taste of these waters take a ride on the Miami Sea Rocket. It's a long and fast powerboat that can seat a large family or group of friends. It will take you on a 35 minute long tour of the waters, checking out the Miami skyline, the different neighborhoods, the various beaches, and zoom through certain passes and straights at full speed. The tour also includes some interesting facts about Miami which only the locals know about so you could end up hearing something you didn’t expect.
The classic sailing style Whoever said that power is all you need on the waters? Sometimes when you in the jewel of America’s coastline, you need to take it slow. You should consider yacht rental miami if you would like to take to the waters in a sailboat. There are of course powered yachts if that is what you prefer but if you want to sail in relative smoothness and quiet, then the classic use of the wind is in order. Bear in mind however, some yachts are only open to be rented during certain hours. Some yachts need to be maintained to a higher standard since they offer luxury cruising, therefore the hours are fewer. Some may be designed for dusk sailing and others can be in the morning instead. It depends on what kind of day you’re looking to have and your skill level with the boat itself.

Top Ways To Help Your Travel Anxiety This Summer

Image

If you are a first time traveller this summer or you have always had issues getting on a plane to go on holiday, you are not alone. For many of us, the idea of being on a plane with lots of people can be scary, and it can indeed make it hard for us to cope with travelling at all. Travel anxiety can be down to a number of different things: it could be that you are scared of flying, scared of leaving home, and scared of not being able to come back. But there are many different things that you can do this summer to make that plane ride much easier and to allow you to stay settled and excited for your trip away.

Fly with a friend

If you struggle with travel and you always seem to feel anxious on the plane, the worst thing you can possibly do for yourself is to travel on your own. Make sure when you plan to go away somewhere that you always have someone that you know and trust sitting next to you. Being on a plane with someone that you know will make things much easier for you to cope with the flight because they will be there to support you and tell you that it’s all ok. Even if you don’t have a panic right away, a friend or partner will be able to distract you from the plane by talking to you and playing a game with you. Never travel alone if possible because it will make you feel overwhelmed.

Relaxation techniques

One of the useful skills you can start to learn as you prepare for a flight is relaxation techniques. There are many great ways to relax your body and your mind and now is the perfect time to use these skills to make sure that you don’t pay attention to the plane leaving the ground. You can close your eyes and focus on your breathing for a while and start to imagine that you are entering a happy place. It could be a meadow, a secret garden or even a beach. Imagine yourself in this place and think about everything you can see, hear and smell. Focusing on this will take you away from the present moment and will allow you to truly relax for a while and calm your anxieties. You will be able to keep your eyes closed and stay in your happy place as long as you feel you need to, and only bring yourself back to the present again when you are completely ready to.

Focus on something calm

Another great thing that you can do for yourself when flying is to focus your attention on something which stays calm and unmoving. It could be a bottle of water on your table, the pattern of cushion in front of you or the luggage in the overhead bay. Think of something which isn’t moving and focus on it for a while. This way, your body will feel calm too because you will no longer feel as if you are moving through the sky. You can also think about putting some calming music on if you can or even playing a meditation tape to help you stay calm.

Use a weighted blanket

One of the things which can really be a godsend for those who suffer from anxiety is a weighted blanket. When we are anxious and worked up we often feel unsettled and exposed to the world. Paranoia can set in easily and we can end up feeling completely out of control with our lives and everything in it. A weighted blanket is the perfect calming tool for anyone with anxiety because it gives you the sensation of being hugged and being covered up. You will feel safe and protected and this can allow you to rest and sleep for the duration of the flight. If you are able to sleep this is the best thing for you to do.

Avoid alcohol

Before a flight, a lot of people will suggest to you that you should have a stiff drink or two as a bit of Dutch courage, however this can actually make you feel more paranoid when you get on the plane and take off. The reason for this is that alcohol is a depressant and it slows our reactions, it makes us feel groggy and we can also feel more emotional as a result. If you are already anxious and worried about a flight, a drink might just amplify these fears and make you feel even worse, to a point where you cannot even get on the flight at all. Drink lots of water and vitamin packed fruit juice before a flight to keep your body happy.

Sit at the front

If you are able to afford first class seats, buy them for a flight. When you are in the regular section of a plane you often end up being crammed in next to people you don’t know and this can make for a very stressful flight. If you have social anxiety as well as travel anxiety this will make you feel twice as bad and you will not be able to settle for the duration of the flight. If you are able to buy a first class seat you will be away from the crowds and you will have a much larger seat to yourself. This will allow you to get comfortable and calm yourself which can make your flight much more enjoyable.

Remember your plans

When you get on a flight you can be so distracted by the experience that you forget about where you are going. When you are suffering from anxiety on a plane make sure that you start to remember the reason you are on the plane  in the first place. Maybe you rented out some apartments for yourself and your friends for a few weeks away, maybe you are going for an all-inclusive hotel retreat… remembering your reason for a flight can make the whole experience much more relaxing and you will be able to look forward to what’s in store when you get off the plane. You’ll no longer feel consumed by anxiety because you will know that in a few hours you’ll be off doing whatever you want.

Bring entertainment

Make sure when you get on a plane that you bring something to do. You can bring your favourite book, a sketchbook to draw in or even a pack of cards to play with your partner. You can also think about watching one of the in-flight movies to keep your mind occupied throughout the flight. If you are able to do something that you enjoy on the plane this is the ideal way to combat those feelings of anxiety and stress.

Talk to someone

If you are trying all of the things above and you still seem to be panicking at the thought of getting onto a flight, it might just be that you need to air your issues to someone else. Go to your local doctors and talk to them about your problems. Let them know what feelings you are having and what you think is causing these feelings. A doctor will always be able to help you along the way with your stress and they might even be able to refer you to a counsellor to get some proper treatment for your anxiety. This way you will be able to truly be happy and finally get on a flight in peace.

Coastal Hikes Worth Visiting America For

Ask anyone that has ever laced up a pair of boots what makes hiking so worthwhile and they’ll all tell you it’s the view. That’s what makes every climb, every ache and pain, and every early start worth it a million times over, especially if that view is a cocktail of rugged coastlines, endless oceans, a white sand beaches, curious caves and the straight line of a horizon - and America has thousands of these in its outdoors coffers.

To remove the guesswork for you, we’ve pulled together a list of coastal hikes that will make your eyes fizz, your heart pound a few moments faster and your memory cling onto to these views like they’re set to vanish. Enjoy.

1. Ocean Path, Maine
If you’re ever in Stephen King territory and want to explore an easy but breathtaking hike, you need to hot-step it to the Acadia National Park and enjoy the waterside path between Sand Beach and Otter Cliffs. Tidal pools, coves, incredible rock formations, forests - this walk has it all. But the best bit of the bunch is the Thunder Hole, so pack a picnic and enjoy the growling noise this spot makes when waves crash into the shore.

2. Cape Perpetua, Oregon
For those wanting a more dramatic set of vistas and challenges, look no further than the Siuslaw National Forest, which boasts a network of trails along rough lava cliffs, over rocky coves and past collapsed caves, most of which have book-worthy names, like Thor’s Well, Spouting Horn and Cook’s Chasm. But it’s not just the coastal part that makes this staggering. It’s the journey inland too, through the dense web of trees that make this such a magical hike.

3. Myakka River, Florida
When you think of coastal walks in Florida, you probably imagine white beaches specked with brightly coloured - and barely-there - bikinis. But head book into the SpringHill Suites Tampa Westshore Airport and you will have most of Tampa Bay to explore and, trust us, this place is rich with parks and preserves. Of them all, though, our favorite has to be the Myakka River State Park, which is an enormous park found in Florida’s beautiful Sarasota and allows you to take a step back in time to “the real Florida.”

4. North Coast Route, Washington
What makes this part of Washington such a hit with accomplished hikers is the wild and wet Olympic National Park Wilderness Coast, which offers people more than 70 miles of amazingly rugged coastline. Of course, that much choice can be overwhelming, and doing it all can be too challenging, which is why we would point you toward the twenty-mile hike from Ozette to Rialto. Just be warned, this path can be tricky and you’re probably going to need to use a bunch of ladders and ropes to clamber over some of the rocks. But like we said, the views are more than worth the effort. From amazing wildlife to beautiful tide pools, this place has it all.

And there we have it, four coastal hikes that let you explore the different corners of America.
